Technology and US

At Westville Family dental we keep abreast of the latest technical advances in order to facilitate optimal dental treatment four our patients.

Digital Xrays

There are two types of dental radiological examinations—intraoral, with sensors placed inside the mouth, and extraoral, where the sensor is outside the mouth.  An extraoral X-ray image is commonly referred to as a Panoramic X-ray and is used to visualize a larger region.

At Westville Family Dental, we are equipped with both a digital intraoral x-ray machine as well as a digital extraoral panoramic machine, commonly referred to as a digital Panorex .

Fi digital radiography reduces our   patient’s exposure to radiation—usually 70 to 80 percent.  Many patients are very relieved that digital radiology significantly lowers the amount of radiation they will receive.

In addition, there is no chemical processing of the x-rays, eliminating the inconvenience and environmental impact associated with disposal of conventional film developers.

Thirdly, digital X-rays facilitate communication with patients as well as other practitioners.  The digital images are immediately available to view. Using current technology, it is very easy to enhance, enlarge, or refine the X-ray images. Brightness, color and/or contrast of digital X-rays can be adjusted without re-exposing the patient for another film.  Patients are now able to view their X-rays instantaneously on the computer monitor screens located in each operatory.

One of the most useful advantages, is that we  can send the digital image to other doctors in a few minutes.  Often, while a patient is still seated in the dental chair, we can call other referring doctors to discuss their treatment plan.  This can understandably save time for both patients and doctors alike.

Finally, digital X-ray images can be stored in each patient’s database on the computer.  This process saves time and allows me to easily retrieve this information when necessary.

As you can see, digital radiology offers many advantages when compared with traditional film based X-rays.  The decision to ‘go digital’ in our new office has both enhanced and improved patient care.

Intraoral Camera

The intra-oral camera makes going to the dentist easier for both the patient and the dental health provider. The  use intra-oral cameras allow patients to visualize the condition of their teeth on the patient monitors in each room,, which in turn makes for the  patient examination process to be much more interactive and educational. this provides patients with a greater sense of understanding and responsibility about personal dental health. Although a traditional visual inspection of the teeth may have sufficed in the past, technology has made it possible for dentists and patients to reap many more benefits from each dental  exam.

Noise Canceling Bluetooth Headphones

Whstrive to make your visit to our practice as comfortable as possible. as a part of this endeavor,, we provide our patiets with Bluetooth head cancelling headphones . this allows the patients to block out all unnecessary and unpleasants typically associated with a dental office ( the whine of a dental drill is often the source of a patients anxiety!!) while listening to their favorite music.

Nitrous Oxide

Both dentists and doctors use nitrous oxide as an anesthetic because it offers them and their patients many benefits. The gas, known commonly as laughing gas, has been in use since 1844 and continues to be used safely today.

Perhaps the greatest benefit is that it helps patients relax without putting them to sleep. Patients remain conscious during the procedure and even have the ability to communicate with the dentist. However, many patients have little or no memory of what happened during the procedure. This allows the dentist to perform a procedure in less time, and it also allows the patient avoid discomfort during the procedure. The gas also gives patients a happy feeling that helps them relax even more.

Initial Oral Examination
Your initial oral examination includes a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis and treatment recommendations. We will also take x-rays, which includes the panoramic x-ray for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth as well as the bite-wing x-ray series for proper diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.

Implants
Implants are synthetic structures that are placed in the area of the tooth normally occupied by the root. Implants are anchored to the jawbone or metal framework on the bone and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth or permanent bridge. In some cases, implants can be used to attach dentures.
